The BMW M Roadster was designed to be the performance version of the BMW Z3, and there were significant differences between the two variants. The body of the M Roadster had many differences including the front & rear bumpers, gills, wider rear wings, boot and mirrors.

Power was provided by a straight 3.2L 6 cylinder normally aspirated engine producing 321BHP and fed to the rear wheels via a ZF 5 speed manual gearbox and a limited slip diff. Top speed was limited to 155mph.

Under the skin many of the components were beefed up with many of them taken from the E30 M3 and E36 M3 Evo including the brakes and much of the suspension. Based on the E36 platform the M Roadster ran a wider track under the flared wheel arches as well as wider wheels and tires to try to tame the increased power. Standard tyre sizes for the M Roadster is 225/45r17 at the front and 245/40r17 at the back. A dual exhaust system fed each set of three cylinders to two dual tailpipes. This quad exhaust has since become an BMW M division signature.

The interior had a different look to the standard Z3, starting with the M-version steering wheel and including different instrumentation such as an oil temperature gauge. Finally, the car was available in M-specific colours which were not released for the regular Z3 in the early production years.

The production numbers for RHD roadsters was less than 1,000 so they have always been desirable and rare. Now 20 years down the line they are deemed a fully functional young classic and low mileage car values are on the increase, deservedly so.

Our car, a 1998 model finished in the most popular combination of Estoril Blue metallic with 2 tone black & blue Nappa Leather is lovely all round. It has had just 2 previous owners and has covered a warranted 40,000 miles from new.

The service history is complete. We have just fully serviced the car and fitted a new original BMW clutch kit due to a grumbly release bearing. We also noticed 5th gear was difficult to select, common with these cars, so we have fitted a new selector detent kit - a simple job with the gearbox already removed. The wheels have been refurbished with semi matt sparkling silver with grey gloss insides, new matching Continental tyres have been fitted also.

Cosmetically the car needed very little although we have had the bonnet and front bumper re sprayed to remove the few unavoidable age related chips, the car is now immaculate.
The interior is all original with no phone kits or Bluetooth kits having been added at any time, the leather shows only slight wear on the drivers bolster, the carpets are perfect with BMW fitted overmats and it has never been smoked in.

Inside the boot there is the full tool kit with locking wheel bolt, emergency tyre repair kit, un opened first aid kit and a warning triangle. Also stored in the boot is a factory fitted wind deflector in its storage bag.

On the road, due to the care and expense we have lavished, the car behaves impeccably. It pulls like a 'M' Car should, the gears and brakes are faultless and there are no bearing noises at all and is ready for enjoying straight away!
